O8- Hated to fold

I totally hated to fold here, twice my hand went to raise all-in. But I felt like the player easily could have had TT in his hand for a quad. I let it go. Thoughts appreciated.

  • I seriously think that most of the time here you're up against one person with a ten and another with jacks full of tens or tens full of aces or jacks. Absent someone making a totally bonehead move with KQ for Broadway, there's only one possible configuration of hands that gets both opponents all-in and yet beats you, which is jacks full vs. quads. This is one of those situations where even given the size of the bet in relation to the pot, to make the laydown profitable you have to be correct a surprising percentage of the time, and I don't think you're up against quads often enough to make it worth folding.

  • Two questions: 1) have you played with any of these players before? 2) have you taken notes on any of these players? (Or poker tracker stats?)

You should always note which ones are the action junkies.

If the player that had you covered sensed any hesitation on your part, he tries to price you out.

Conversely, if you sit down with ANY size stack, prepare yourself to risk it all at some juncture. Otherwise, play limit.

PLO8 is a game of counter attack. That being said, you trusted your spidey sense and decided to wait for a better situation. That's OK - I lay down the best hand at least once a session (if not more).

  • Yeah, I really don't know what to do. On one hand, O8 is a game of the nut. On the other hand, how concerned should you ever be about running into quads, especially when your min-raise may well have been read as weakness?

  • Interesting hand, but with the nut full house it would have been a tough decision. Only thing that would make me feel that he didn't have quads was his "call" of the 1st players all-in. He didn't re-raise at this point which makes me wonder. If he wanted to scare you off of the hand at that point wouldn't he have re-raised the all-in to try to take it for himself? Your re-raise of his call was a good move, although at that point you felt you still had the best of it.

Calling huge re-raises like what he did at the last point is always a tough call. You'd hate to be wrong but the chances he had quads were probably not there. But if he did have quads, wouldn't he have waited until the river to make a move? Why would he want to scare you off of the hand?

I've been semi-bluffed off hands before by a late reraise when I had the better hand. A very large semi-bluff was needed here, else you would have called and won the hand.
